Those of you who have experienced the critically acclaimed Fire Emblem: Awakening on Nintendo 3DS may be dreaming, like me, of a glorious HD version on the Wii U. Not a remake but a brand new, original Fire Emblem title.
When Intelligent Systems released Awakening on the 3DS it was met with critical and commercial success worldwide and widely considered one of the best games to ever grace the little handheld. Well after all was said and done many gamers out there, myself included, were left wanting more. Even with the vast amount of downloadable content (DLC) that can be purchased within the game, there is always the lingering thought of a bigger and even more beautiful Fire Emblem that could easily be created for Nintendo's home console. With the unexpected success of Awakening and the game-hungry Wii U crowd out there, Intelligent Systems and Nintendo could potentially have a huge hit on their hands. For those of you in-the-know with this series you might be aware that a Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem game was discussed not too long ago by the games director. This is certainly exciting as I am personally a fan of both series and I'm sure many of the readers of this article are fans as well. It is sure to be a great title yet a true sequel to Awakening is still looming upon my mind and I can't help but to think of ideas for this dream-game for the Wii U.
To start, the most obvious new addition to the series would be beautiful high definition graphics thanks to the Wii U hardware. Awakening is regarded as a showcase of the 3DS's graphical capabilities, so why not achieve the same praise on the home console version? I could imagine the character art and design being incredible, even if they chose to stick to the anime style art and chat boxes. Detailed maps with weather effects and dynamic camera angles would be a sight to behold. Of course you also have the battle sequences which could work just as before, switching from the map perspective to a separate battle screen. Even the thought of the GamePad showing the map allowing for quick selections and movement via the stylus is exciting.
Of course, this could just be an option that can be switched on the fly if say, you want to play on the pad exclusively. Perhaps dialogue can be happening on the GamePad screen whilst gameplay is up top. There's plenty of different possibilities that can be made true with Nintendo's unique controller. In my opinion, it's inherent that the company tries to produce as many interesting, useful, and fun ways to use this controller in its games in order to advertise its worth and value to the public. Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, while a fantastic game in its own right, missed an opportunity to use it in any meaningful way opting to turn the screen completely off.
There's more to games than utilizing the control options available to them of course, and I have no doubt that any future game in this franchise will be of quality. This is in terms of both gameplay and soundtrack, which Nintendo is always pushing in its titles. I am genuinely excited for what's next for the franchise and I'm sure, whichever console it happens to land on, it will deliver more engrossing tactical gameplay, beautiful graphics, and wonderful storytelling.
What do you want from the next Fire Emblem? Should Intelligent Systems create it for the Wii U? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
